Overview
Assisted the Women’s Train team in building technical packages, running fit sessions, communicating with vendors, and making fit adjustments in Optitex. Owned multiple styles for upcoming seasons and independently oversaw their development through UA’s PLM system. Worked at UA’s in-house factory sewing leggings, sweatshirts, T-shirts, and more.

The Process
Was assigned independent ownership over the development of a legging and tank set for JD Sportswear, a partner of Under Armour. Here’s what the development process looked like …

The Handoff
The process of receiving sketches from designers involved a presentation of finalized designs, color palettes, proposed skus, season of release, and intended collection. As the Tech Designer, my responsibilities included communicating with the Designer to clarify their intent, specifications, and restraints on my end. These conversations often revolved around strategy regarding brand identity, cohesion, collection deliverables, and non-negotiables of our buyers.
Tech Pack Building
Fit Sessions and Adjustments
Fit sessions occur with the entire Women’s Train team, including Designers, Costing, PLM’s, Graphics Developers, and Technical Designers. Throughout the summer, I assisted in pinning and cutting on the live fit model per callouts by the Pod, and took notes on all adjustments made. When my JD styles came in, I ran my own fit session. Before the fit session, I pre-fit the style by cross-checking the style to the Tech Pack, checking critical POMS, and taking detailed notes on the sample to call out to the team. This included pre-fits on the fit form to check for any irregularities or handling issues.
During the fit session, I introduced the styles and noted any callouts from my pre-fit session. With a fit session being run by the Tech Designers, I ensured my presentation was well-prepped and professional. As the Pod reviewed the fit, I made necessary cuts and pins according to their callouts. For example, if the sleeve cap was cutting into the body I would cut a slight opening, or if we needed to pitch the back of a top, I would pin however much length requested. At the end of the fit for each style, I recapped the changes made and introduced the next style.
Release Comments
After the fit session, I return to write fit comments for the vendor. These comment pages are split into multiple different sections, including Fit, Construction, Trims, and more. In the comments, I review each section including adjustments, improvements, or what the team liked. I upload the front, side, and back fit photos taken from the session, and upload them to the Tech Pack. I also make any adjustments to the Tech Pack according to the fit notes, including adjusting construction pages, creating detail images in Illustrator, adjusting the measurement chart, and more.
Ideation
Take a peek at my creative brainstorming process! Before creating B&W sketches, I sketch different ideations of the style I intend to develop. Working on this project independently, I was able to explore all aspects of the design process.
B&W Sketches
Next, I created Black and White Sketches in Adobe Illustrator. These sketches are crucial for Tech Packs and Handoffs, stripped down of colorways to their basic design.
…
Colorways
Along with the B&W Sketches, Colorways are created. These also belong in the Techpack, and are presented during Handoffs. Color palettes are determined each season that designers select from for uniformity. I selected a classic Black, and Taupe Dusk
Construction Pages
One of my key responsibilities over the summer was building Construction Pages. After selecting available fabrics with the UA Factory, I determined which thread types to use at each seam. These decisions were made for both functionality and aestheitc appeal. When creating Construction Pages, I often provide detailed images on the side for more complex elemets, such as with the legging.

Construction Pages
When building this BOM, I filled out all sections. All seams were selected are DTM unless they are a 605 cover-stitch, which is the white pop-stitching.
Measurement Charts
To fill out these measurement charts, I referenced previous UA styles, physical samples, and my knowledge of patterns. I picked out important POMs relevant to the specific styles.

Production!
With a fully functional factory within Under Armour’s headquarters, I was able to prototype, create, and develop with ease. This process included laser cutting my patterns, utilizing a variety of sewing machines, and heat-pressing logos. Check out how I leveraged the TechPacks I generated to build these styles!
Project Challenge
Goal: Through market research and data analysis, come up with a pitch for how Under Armour can better convey fit through their E-commerce site to online shoppers using knowledge of Technical Design.
